The Hawley Society was organized in 1923 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, by descendants of Joseph Hawley (1603-1690), believed to be one of the first Hawleys to settle in the new world. We exist to preserve the memory, records and history of the Hawley Family, and to promote friendly acquaintance and sociability among our members.

We were incorporated in Connecticut in 1927 and are a corporation managed by an Executive Committee who serve as volunteers. There are no employees on payroll. Membership dues help fund the ongoing operations. Two of our primary missions are continuing the search to find our English antecedents and to update and republish THE HAWLEY RECORD, 1890.

EBENEZER HAWLEY 1682-1757

Ebenezer Hawley (HR19), son of Samuel Sr, was born 25 Feb 1682, and is reported to have lived in Simsbury, CT; but very little has been learned of him besides the names of his children.

  • James Hawley (HR2550)
  • Ruth Hawley (HR2551)
  • Levi Hawley (HR2552)
  • Ann Hawley (HR2553)

There is am entry on the Probate Records at Hartford, CT that administration was granted on the estate of Ebenezer Hawley of Simsbury, CT, 7 June 1757 and that the said Ebenezer departed this life 10 or 15 April 1757.  Another entry dated 3 May 1758 says:

A request of the commissioners on the estate was exhibited and a list of the movables set out to the widow; and that a son, James, a minor aged 18 years, chose Lt John Rice of Farmington, as his guardian.  Hence he did not die before 1717, as stated in the table work of this book at #19.
