The Hawley Society was organized in 1923 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, by descendants of Joseph Hawley (1603-1690), believed to be one of the first Hawleys to settle in the new world. We exist to preserve the memory, records and history of the Hawley Family, and to promote friendly acquaintance and sociability among our members.

We were incorporated in Connecticut in 1927 and are a corporation managed by an Executive Committee who serve as volunteers. There are no employees on payroll. Membership dues help fund the ongoing operations. Two of our primary missions are continuing the search to find our English antecedents and to update and republish THE HAWLEY RECORD, 1890.

WE WANT YOUR DNA!

We don’t ask for much, just a small sample of your genetic material!

The Society of the Hawley Family is proud and very pleased to sponsor the Hawley Surname Project at FamilyTreeDNA.    A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, this test is for males taking a Y-DNA test.  The importance of the information allows one to scientifically understand the genetic connection or lack thereof to others in the study.   Many of us having done pen and paper research at times are forced to make assumptions due to the lack of availability of some records.    Utilizing DNA can close the gap and increase one’s level of certainty of their ancestry.    The goal ultimately is to scientifically connect ourselves to our European ancestors since at this time, we have no specific proof of our antecedents.

We invite and encourage you to participate in the DNA Study if you are a Hawley or an individual with any variation of the surname. Valuable information can be gained from your participation!  The larger the sample of participants, the greater degree of information and certainty available to all participants.
