This reunion was held at the Historical Society of Brookfield, CT and featured Daniel

Cruson as guest speaker. Mr. Cruson is a retired high school teacher and has done

extensive research and writing on the history of towns of central Fairfield county,

including Easton, Redding, and Newtown. He also conducted several archaeological

investigations in these towns to learn more about their past citizens and culture.

OUR HISTORY

Mr Cruson spoke to us about Mary Elizabeth Hawley (1857-1930). Miss Hawley

returned from her European honeymoon alone and was subsequently divorced.

ABOUT US

She returned to Newtown and became a recluse. She began nine years of significant

welath disbursement and became a major benefactress to the town. She built a new

high school in 1921 as well as the Edmund Town Hall (named for her maternal great

grandfather).

Mary Elizabeth Hawley was descended from Joseph Hawley (1603-1690). Her line of
